Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a synthetic tooth root that can be used in combination with a dental crown to replace a missing tooth. Each dental implant is crafted out of a special titanium alloy that fuses directly with your bone in a process called osseointegration. Once you have the implants installed, they appear just like your other teeth, brightening your smile and giving you back your confidence.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many benefits and function quite well as replacements for any natural teeth you may have lost. Because they’re designed to fuse with your bone, they look and feel much like your original teeth.

With dental implants you can chew and eat just as you did with your real teeth, and additionally you’ll experience no speech changes. Also, dental implants are easy to manage as there are often no removable parts and oral hygiene is easier to maintain. Because they appear much as your original teeth did, you can expect to smile confidently knowing that you have bright, beautiful teeth to show.

What can I expect when getting my dental implants?

First, you’ll meet with the team of highly trained and experienced prosthodontists and they’ll review your situation and discuss it with you. Next, the team develops an individualized care plan that addresses your unique needs.

Secondly, your prosthodontist will put a permanent tooth root implant into the root of your missing tooth or teeth, which then fuses with your jawbone over a period of about six to 12 weeks. Next, the team adds an abutment to the implant, which connects the root implant to your new crown, or tooth. We take precise measurements of your mouth and bite, and create a new color-matched tooth to fit beautifully next to your other teeth.

Are dental implants painful?

Most patients report little to no discomfort with the implantation procedure. You may experience a small amount of soreness following the procedure, but this can be effectively managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
